What you’ll learn

  1. Same Spot, Different NameUnderstand equivalent fractions as different names for the same amount, shown on a number line.Equivalent fractions have different numbers but the same value, like 1/2 and 2/4. On a fraction bar they shade the same length, and on a number line they land on the exact same point.
  2. Making Equivalent FractionsMake equivalent fractions by multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same number. To make an equivalent fraction, multiply the top and bottom by the same number. So 1/2 becomes 2/4, 3/6, or 4/8 — all the same amount. Every fraction has a whole family of equivalents.
  3. Finding EquivalentsFind and complete equivalent fractions using number lines and the multiply rule.Number lines show equivalents at a glance — 2/4 sits right where 1/2 does. To find a missing number, multiply the top and bottom by the same amount: 1/2 = 4/8 and 2/3 = 4/6.
