What you’ll learn

  1. Say WhyExplain answers with a reason and check whether an answer makes sense.A strong math answer comes with a reason. Say the answer, then 'because' and how you know: '7, because 4 and 3 make 7.' Smart thinkers also check: adding should make more, and taking away should make less. If 3 + 4 gave 2, something is wrong.
  2. Share Your ThinkingExplain solving steps in order and kindly check a friend's reasoning. When explaining a bigger problem, go step by step so others can follow: 'I started with 8, took 2 from the 5 to make 10, had 3 left, and 10 and 3 make 13.' You can also be a math helper by checking if a friend's reason makes sense and kindly fixing mistakes.

Questions this course answers

Which is the BEST way to explain your answer?

Giving the answer AND the reason with 'because' shows how you know.

The reason for 6 − 2 = 4 is...

Taking 2 away from 6 really does leave 4, so that is the true reason.

You add 3 + 4 and get 2. Does that make sense?

Adding two numbers makes a bigger number, so 2 is too small to be right.

When explaining a big problem, it's best to...

Going step by step makes your thinking easy to follow.

A friend says '5 + 1 = 5.' How can you help?

Adding 1 makes the number bigger, so 5 + 1 = 6, not 5.
