🔢 Finding Patterns in Times Tables
Times tables aren't just facts to memorise — they're full of hidden patterns! Spot the tricks in the 2s, 5s, 9s and more, and use them to unlock even the trickiest multiplication.
What you’ll learn
- Counting in StepsSkip count in 2s, 5s, and 10s and notice the repeating last-digit patterns. Many times tables are just skip counting. The 2s give even numbers ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, 8; the 5s give 5, 10, 15, 20 with last digits of 5 or 0. Feeling these steady steps builds the multiplication facts naturally.
- Patterns in the GridSpot turn-around facts, five-fact endings, and the nine times table digit trick. The times table grid is full of patterns. Turn-around facts mean 3 × 4 = 4 × 3, halving what you must learn. Fives always end in 5 or 0, and in the nines the tens digit rises while the ones falls, with the two digits always adding to 9.
- Using Patterns to SolveUse known facts and number patterns to work out trickier multiplication like 6 × 7 and 7 × 8.Patterns aren't just for spotting — they help you solve. Break 6 × 7 into 5 × 7 + 7 = 42, and remember 7 × 8 = 56 with the 5, 6, 7, 8 trick. Leaning on facts you know makes the hard ones reachable.
Questions this course answers
What comes next when you count in twos: 2, 4, 6, 8, __?
Counting in twos means adding 2 each time, so after 8 comes 10.
Every number in the 5 times table ends in...
Counting in fives gives 5, 10, 15, 20 — the last digit is always 5 or 0.
What is 5 × 6?
Count six fives: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30. So 5 × 6 = 30.
3 × 4 = 12. So what is 4 × 3?
Turn-around facts give the same total, so 4 × 3 is also 12.
In 9 × 4 = 36, what do the two digits 3 and 6 add up to?
The digits of every nine fact add to 9, and 3 + 6 = 9.
Using 5 × 7 = 35, what is 6 × 7?
6 × 7 is one more 7 than 5 × 7, so 35 + 7 = 42.
