What you’ll learn
- Sharing into Equal GroupsFind a unit fraction of an amount by dividing the amount by the denominator. To find a unit fraction of an amount, divide the amount by the bottom number. One quarter of 12 is 12 ÷ 4 = 3; one half of 10 is 10 ÷ 2 = 5. It is the same as sharing the amount equally into that many groups and looking at one group.
- More Than One PartFind a non-unit fraction of an amount by dividing by the denominator, then multiplying by the numerator. For fractions with a top number bigger than 1, use two steps: divide by the bottom number to find one part, then multiply by the top number. Three quarters of 12 is 12 ÷ 4 = 3, then 3 × 3 = 9. Two thirds of 12 is 12 ÷ 3 = 4, then 4 × 2 = 8.
