What you’ll learn

  1. Unit Fractions of GroupsFind unit fractions (1/3, 1/4) of a group by sharing into equal groups. To find a unit fraction of a group, share the objects into equal groups — the bottom number says how many groups. 1/3 of 12 is 4, and 1/4 of 12 is 3. One equal group is the answer.
  2. More Than One PartFind non-unit fractions (2/4, 3/4) of amounts by finding one part then taking several. For fractions like 3/4, first find one part by sharing into equal groups, then take as many parts as the top number says. 3/4 of 12 is 9. The bottom number makes the groups; the top number picks how many to take.
