🍕 Representing Numbers and Fractions
The same number can wear many costumes — blocks, tens and ones, a spot on a line, or a slice of a whole. Learn to show numbers and fractions in different ways and see how they all connect.
What you’ll learn
- Showing NumbersRepresent two-digit numbers as tens and ones using place value and base-ten blocks.Numbers can be shown in many ways that all mean the same thing. Place value splits a two-digit number into tens and ones: 34 is 3 tens (30) and 4 ones. Reading the tens and ones lets you understand and rebuild any number.
- Numbers on a LinePlace and compare numbers on a number line using the multiples of ten as signposts.A number line gives each number a spot, with bigger numbers further right. 34 sits between the 30 and 40 signposts, which shows it's more than 30 and less than 40. The multiples of ten act as landmarks for placing and comparing numbers.
- Fractions Are Parts of a WholeUnderstand fractions as equal parts of a whole and name halves, thirds, and quarters.A fraction is a fair share of a whole, so all parts must be equal in size. One of two equal parts is a half, one of three is a third, and one of four is a quarter. Different fractions, like one half and two quarters, can even name the same amount.
Questions this course answers

Which number is bigger, 34 or 43?
43 has 4 tens while 34 has only 3 tens, so 43 is bigger.
For something to be a fraction, the parts must be...
