What you’ll learn

  1. Draw Your ThinkingDraw circles, cross out, and use tally marks to show adding and take-away.Showing how you got an answer starts with a picture. Draw one circle per thing: 3 and 2 more makes 5. To take away, draw the group and cross some out — 5 with 2 crossed out leaves 3. Tally marks count too, bundling into fives.
  2. Explain with a PictureMatch drawings to number sentences and show work step by step.A drawing is a map of your thinking that anyone can follow. Circles for adding match sentences like 3 + 2, and crossed-out circles match take-away like 4 − 1. Show work in order: draw the groups, add or cross out, count, then write the answer.
