What you’ll learn

  1. One Picture, Many ThingsRead a scaled pictogram where each symbol represents several items. When numbers get big, one symbol can stand for a group — like each star meaning 5 books. Count in that step size to read totals, and remember a half symbol shows half of the group. Scaled pictograms let us show large amounts with just a few pictures.
  2. Scaled Bar GraphsRead a scaled bar graph whose axis counts up in steps.A scaled bar graph has a side scale that counts in steps, such as 5s. A bar's value is how many steps it reaches multiplied by the step size. Scaling keeps big numbers inside a small, neat graph so they are easy to draw and read.
  3. Solving Graph PuzzlesSolve one- and two-step problems using scaled graphs. To solve graph puzzles, first read each value using the scale, then do the maths. One-step questions compare or add two values; two-step questions might add two bars and then compare with a third. Taking it one step at a time turns big graphs into simple sums.

Questions this course answers

If each apple symbol means 5, half a symbol means about:

Half of 5 is 2½, so a half symbol shows about 2 or 3.

Why do we use a scale on a bar graph?

Scaling lets big amounts fit neatly without huge bars.

Football = 25 and tennis = 10. How many more chose football?

25 − 10 = 15 more children chose football.
