What you’ll learn

  1. Of Means TimesRecognise that 'of' signals multiplication and find a fraction of an amount by multiplying. In word problems, the word 'of' usually means multiply. So 'one half of 8' means one half times 8. Finding a fraction of an amount is a multiplying problem: one third of 12 is 1/3 × 12, which is the same as 12 ÷ 3 = 4. This shows up whenever you halve a recipe or share a treat.
  2. Groups of a FractionMultiply a whole number by a fraction to solve problems about repeated fractional amounts.Multiplying with fractions also works when you have groups of a fraction. Four glasses each half full is 4 × 1/2 = 4/2 = 2 full glasses. Three batches each needing 1/4 cup of oil is 3 × 1/4 = 3/4 of a cup. Count the groups, multiply, and simplify the answer if it passes one whole.

Questions this course answers

In a word problem, the word 'of' often tells you to...

'Of' is a signal to multiply, so 'one half of 8' means one half times 8.

'One third of 12' can be written as...

'Of' means multiply, so one third of 12 is 1/3 × 12.

What is 1/4 of 12?

Multiplying by 1/4 is the same as dividing by 4: 12 ÷ 4 = 3.

You have 4 glasses, each 1/2 full. Altogether that is...

4 × 1/2 = 4/2, which is 2 whole glasses.

A recipe needs 1/4 cup of oil per batch. For 3 batches you need...

3 × 1/4 = 3/4, so you need three quarters of a cup.
