What you’ll learn

  1. A Fraction of an AmountFind a fraction of an amount by dividing by the denominator and multiplying by the numerator. To find a fraction of an amount, divide by the bottom number to find one part, then multiply by the top. For 3/4 of 12: 12 ÷ 4 = 3, then 3 × 3 = 9. The same two moves find 1/4 of 20 = 5 and 2/3 of 12 = 8.
  2. Percents Are Fractions TooUnderstand percent as 'out of 100' and match common percents to their fractions.Percent means 'per hundred,' so 25% is 25/100, which simplifies to 1/4. The friendly percents each equal a simple fraction: 50% = 1/2, 75% = 3/4, 10% = 1/10, and 20% = 1/5. Picturing a bar of 100 parts shows the percent and the fraction cover the same amount.
  3. Finding a Percent of an AmountFind a percent of an amount by rewriting the percent as a fraction. To find a percent of an amount, turn the percent into a fraction and take that fraction of the number: 25% of 40 = 1/4 of 40 = 10. Finding 10% is a handy shortcut — just divide by 10, so 10% of 50 = 5. The same method gives 50% of 30 = 15 and 75% of 12 = 9.
