What you’ll learn

  1. Percent Means Out of 100Understand a percent as a number of parts out of 100 and link it to a fraction.A percent means parts out of 100. Picture a whole split into 100 equal pieces: the percent tells how many you have. A fraction like 1/2 names the same amount as 50%, because half of 100 is 50.
  2. Everyday Halves and QuartersConvert the common fractions half, quarter, and three-quarters to percents. The everyday fractions have friendly percents: 1/2 = 50%, 1/4 = 25%, 3/4 = 75%, and one whole = 100%. Rewriting each fraction as parts out of 100 makes the percent easy to see.
  3. Fifths, Tenths and BeyondConvert tenths and fifths to percents and compare fractions using 50%.For tenths and fifths, count how many hundredths each part is worth: 1/10 = 10% and 1/5 = 20%, so 3/5 = 60%. Turning fractions into percents also makes them easy to compare against a half.
