What you’ll learn

  1. The Line Means DivideUnderstand a fraction as division of the top by the bottom. The bar in a fraction is a division sign. 3/4 means 3 divided by 4 - three cookies shared among four children, giving each 3/4 of a cookie. The fraction names the size of one equal share.
  2. Sharing Makes FractionsWrite sharing situations as divisions and as fractions. When you share equally, the amount shared goes on top and the number of shares on the bottom. Sharing 1 bar between 2 people gives 1 divided by 2 = 1/2, and 1 pizza among 4 gives 1/4 each.
  3. Fractions Bigger Than OneRecognize when sharing produces a fraction greater than one whole. When the number shared is bigger than the number of shares, each portion is more than one whole. Sharing 5 cookies among 4 gives 5/4 = 1 1/4. Comparing the top and bottom tells you whether a share is under or over one whole.
