➗ Dividing with Unit Fractions
Two big ideas - how many unit fractions fit in a whole, and how to split a unit fraction among a group.
What you’ll learn
- How Many Fit Inside?Divide a whole number by a unit fraction by counting how many pieces fit.Dividing a whole number by a unit fraction asks how many of those pieces fit inside. Each whole holds 4 quarters, so 3 divided by 1/4 is 3 x 4 = 12. Dividing by a unit fraction is the same as multiplying by its bottom number, and the answer grows larger.
- Splitting a FractionDivide a unit fraction by a whole number by splitting it into smaller pieces.Dividing a unit fraction by a whole number splits it into smaller pieces. Cutting 1/2 into 3 shares makes sixths, so 1/2 divided by 3 = 1/6. Keep the top at 1 and multiply the bottom by the whole number; the answer gets smaller.
- Two Kinds of SharingTell apart and solve both types of unit-fraction division. Two kinds of division appear when sharing: fitting unit fractions into wholes (which grows the answer, like 4 divided by 1/2 = 8) and splitting unit fractions among people (which shrinks it, like 1/4 divided by 2 = 1/8). Matching and sorting problems builds fluency with both.
Questions this course answers
What does 3 divided by 1/4 mean?
It asks how many quarter-pieces fit inside 3 wholes.
3 divided by 1/4 = ?
Each whole holds 4 fourths, and 3 x 4 = 12.
2 divided by 1/3 = ?
Each whole holds 3 thirds, so 2 x 3 = 6.
4 divided by 1/2 = ?
Each whole holds 2 halves, so 4 x 2 = 8.
Dividing a whole number by a unit fraction gives an answer that is...
Many small pieces fit inside, so the count is bigger than the whole number.
