What Is Estimating?Understand that an estimate is a smart, informed guess of a measurement, different from a wild guess.An estimate is your best sensible guess about a measurement before measuring exactly. A smart guess builds on something you already know (a door is a bit taller than an adult, so about two meters), unlike a wild guess that picks any number. People estimate constantly in daily life.

Body RulersLearn to use body parts — pinky nail (~1 cm), thumb tip (~1 inch), hand span (~9 in) — as approximate rulers for estimating.Body parts stay about the same size, so they make handy always-available rulers. A pinky nail is about 1 cm, a thumb tip to first knuckle about 1 inch, and a spread hand span about 9 inches (23 cm). These give close estimates, not exact measurements.

Estimate, Then MeasurePractice the guess–measure–compare routine using real objects with known measurements.Good estimators follow a three-step routine: make a smart guess, measure exactly with a ruler or tape, then compare to see how close they were. The compare step trains better estimating. Real examples: a new pencil ~19 cm, a bank card 85.6 mm wide, a door ~203 cm tall.

How Close Were You?Understand that comparing a guess to the actual value means finding the difference by subtraction (big minus small).The difference between a guess and the real answer is found by subtracting the smaller from the larger (19 − 15 = 4). Shown on a number line, that difference is the gap between the two points. Closer guesses make a smaller gap, and being close — not perfect — is the goal.

Comparing Two LengthsCompare two measured lengths and find how much longer one is, using subtraction.Comparing two objects means measuring both and finding the difference with big minus small (ruler 30 cm − pencil 19 cm = 11 cm longer). A bar chart makes the comparison visible: longer bars mean longer objects.
  6. Measuring Time TooApply the estimate-then-check routine to time, using seconds, minutes, and a stopwatch.Time is a measurement too, in seconds, minutes, and hours. The same routine works: guess a duration, measure it with a clock or stopwatch, then compare using big minus small. Estimating is a single skill that transfers across many kinds of measurement.

Putting It TogetherUnderstand why estimating first is valuable: it makes measuring meaningful and catches measurement mistakes.Estimating before measuring is worthwhile because a sensible guess flags mistakes — if a measured answer (2 m for a pencil) is wildly different from a smart estimate, something went wrong. Estimating means using what you know to guess what you don't. Knowing a door is a bit taller than a grown-up lets you guess about two meters — that's smart, not wild.

You want to guess how wide a small coin is and there's no ruler. Which body ruler fits best?

The pinky nail is about 1 cm wide, perfect for guessing tiny things like a coin or a button. The hand span (about 23 cm) is for much bigger objects.

In the estimate-then-check routine, why is comparing your guess to the real answer so important?

The compare step is where the learning happens. Each time you see how close your estimate was, your estimating improves — like practising a game.

A ruler is 30 cm and a pencil is 19 cm. How much longer is the ruler, and how do you find it?

To find how much longer one thing is, subtract the smaller length from the larger: 30 − 19 = 11 cm. Comparing is measuring two things and finding the difference.

You measure a pencil and write down 2 meters, but your estimate said 'about a hand long.' What does the big gap tell you?

A smart estimate acts like a safety check. When the measured answer is wildly different from your sensible guess, it warns you that you likely made a mistake — so you look again.
