What does the area of a shape tell you?

Area is the amount of flat space inside a shape. The distance around the edge is a different measurement.

Why must the squares we use to measure area all be the same size?

Area counts equal units. If the squares were different sizes, counting them wouldn't give a fair measurement of the space.

A rectangle has 3 rows with 4 squares in each row. Why can you count in fours?

When every row has the same amount, you can skip-count by that amount: 4, 8, 12. That's faster than counting one by one.

How do you find the area of a rectangle using the shortcut?

Multiply the two side lengths. One side is how many squares are in a row; the other is how many rows there are.

A rectangle is 6 units long and 2 units wide. What is its area?

6 × 2 = 12 square units. Multiplying the sides gives the same answer as counting all the squares.

A rectangle is 3 cm by 4 cm. Which answer is written correctly?

3 × 4 = 12, and area is measured in squares, so the answer is 12 cm². The little ² shows we are counting squares.
