Mass is measured in grams and kilograms with a scale; volume is measured in milliliters and liters with a measuring cup.
  2. Grams and KilogramsUse grams and kilograms and convert between them (1 kg = 1000 g).Grams are for light things and kilograms for heavy things, and one kilogram equals exactly 1000 grams. To change kilograms to grams you multiply by 1000, and choosing the right unit keeps numbers sensible.

A drop is about a milliliter and a milk carton about a liter, and the units connect by 1000 just like mass units.

Reading a Measuring CupRead a measuring cup accurately at eye level and between the marks.Reading a measuring cup requires looking straight on with your eyes level with the liquid, or the line appears wrong. As with a scale, you count the small lines between the printed numbers to read values like 250 mL.

Measuring in Real LifeApply units and scale-reading to real containers and volume word problems.Everyday containers show units in action: a soda can holds 355 mL, a common water bottle 500 mL, and a big bottle 1000 mL (1 L). Word problems are solved by keeping one unit throughout, so two 500 mL bottles add to exactly 1 liter.
