A Number Needs a NameUnderstand that a measurement has two parts — a number and a unit — and that converting changes the unit, not the amount.A bare number is only half a measurement; the unit tells you how big each count is. Converting swaps the unit for a bigger or smaller one, which changes the number but never the actual quantity.

Why does the course insist that "5" is not yet a measurement?

A measurement has two parts. The number 5 tells 'how many,' but without a unit you don't know how big each one is — 5 grams and 5 kilograms are wildly different.

In the metric system, how much bigger is each step of the ladder than the step just below it?

Metric is base-10: every rung is ten times the one below, which is why converting is just moving a decimal point.

You convert 4 metres into centimetres. What should happen to the number, and why?

Centimetres are smaller than metres, so it takes more of them to make the same length: 4 m = 400 cm. Smaller unit, bigger number.

When doubling a recipe AND converting kilograms to grams, why does the course scale before converting?

Order doesn't change the final amount, but scaling first (1.5 kg → 3 kg) keeps the arithmetic simple; the single ×1000 to grams is saved for the very end.

A 1.5 L carton and a 900 mL bottle — why can't you just say 900 is more than 1.5?

You're comparing a litre-number to a millilitre-number. Convert 1.5 L to 1500 mL first; then 1500 mL clearly beats 900 mL.

Someone converts 250 cm and writes 25000 m. What's the fastest way to know it's wrong?

Estimating catches direction errors instantly. A bookshelf can't be 25 kilometres tall; metres are bigger than cm, so you divide: 250 cm = 2.5 m.
