Benchmarks You Can TrustBuild a set of trusted length and mass benchmarks.Benchmarks are easy-to-picture sizes: about 1 cm (a fingernail), about 1 m (a doorknob's height or a big step), about 1 g (a paperclip), and about 1 kg (a litre of water).   3. Estimate, Then CheckPractise the estimate-then-check loop with real quantities.Learners guess the height of a giraffe (about 5.3 m / 530 cm) and the length of a blue whale (about 30 m), then reveal the sourced answers — training and calibrating their estimation.
  4. A Family of Length UnitsLearn the metric length family and how the units relate by factors of 10, 100 and 1,000.Length units form a staircase: 10 mm = 1 cm, 100 cm = 1 m, 1,000 m = 1 km. The same length can be written in any of them; smaller units give bigger numbers.
  5. You Can't Compare Apples to KilometresApply the rule that measurements must share a unit before they can be compared.You cannot compare 90 'somethings' to 1 'something else'. Converting 1 m to 100 cm makes the comparison with 90 cm straightforward. Same-unit-first is the golden rule of comparing.
  6. Is 1.5 kg or 1,200 g Heavier?Compare masses in different units by converting, e.g. 1.5 kg versus 1,200 g.Because 1 kg = 1,000 g, 1.5 kg = 1,500 g, which is greater than 1,200 g. The bigger-looking number (1,200) is misleading until both are in grams.
