⏱️ Converting Units of Time
Hours, minutes, and seconds are just different-sized rulers for the very same time. Learn the one simple ladder — multiply by 60 to go down, divide by 60 to go up — and turn 3 hours 25 minutes into 20
What you’ll learn
- A Ladder Made of SixtyUnderstand that hours, minutes, and seconds measure the same time at different scales, all linked by 60.Time comes in three everyday sizes — hours, minutes, seconds — that are just different-sized units for the same amount of time. The number 60 links each step of the 'ladder,' so one hour equals 60 minutes equals 3,600 seconds.
- Going Down: MultiplyConvert from a larger time unit to a smaller one by multiplying by 60.To move down the ladder from hours to minutes or minutes to seconds, multiply by 60. The number always gets bigger because it takes many small units to fill the same amount of time.
- Mixed AmountsConvert a mixed amount like 3 hours 25 minutes into a single smaller unit. For mixed amounts, convert the larger part (3 hours = 180 minutes) and then add the part already in the smaller unit (25) to get 205 minutes. Split, convert, add.
- Going Up: DivideConvert from a smaller time unit up to a larger one using division with a remainder. To move up the ladder, divide by 60. 150 seconds ÷ 60 = 2 minutes with a remainder of 30 seconds. The remainder is the leftover that isn't enough to make another whole unit.
- Time All Around YouCompare times given in different units and consolidate two-way conversion. To compare times in different units, convert both to the same unit first, then compare the numbers. Multiply to go down to smaller units, divide to go up to larger ones.
Questions this course answers
Why can the very same amount of time be called both "1 hour" and "3,600 seconds"?
Converting never changes how much time there is. An hour and 3,600 seconds are the same stretch of time measured with different-sized units, connected by 60 × 60 = 3,600.
On the "ladder of time," what does the number 60 do?
Sixty is the key link on the ladder — each step between seconds, minutes, and hours is a factor of 60.
To change 4 hours into minutes, what should you do, and why does the number get bigger?
Going down to a smaller unit means multiplying: 4 × 60 = 240 minutes. It takes many small units to fill the same time, so the number grows.
What is the smartest first step to turn 2 hours 15 minutes into total minutes?
Convert the big part first: 2 × 60 = 120 minutes. Then add the 15 minutes that were already small: 120 + 15 = 135 minutes.
You divide 150 seconds by 60 and get 2 with 30 left over. What does that leftover 30 mean?
The remainder is the leftover seconds. 2 × 60 = 120 uses up two full minutes, and 150 − 120 = 30 seconds remain: 2 minutes 30 seconds.
Going UP the ladder from seconds to minutes, which operation do you use?
Up the ladder you divide by 60. Bigger units need fewer of them, so the number gets smaller — the mirror image of multiplying to go down.
