A decimal simply means 'and a bit more' — 3.5 km is 3 whole kilometres plus half of another. Because metric runs on tens, converting a decimal is the same as sliding the decimal point along, which is why 3.5 km, 3500 m, and 350000 cm are all the very same distance.

Why is the metric system easier to convert than older systems like inches, feet, and miles?

Twelve inches make a foot, but 5,280 feet make a mile — messy numbers you must memorise. Metric runs entirely on tens (10 mm in a cm, 100 cm in a m, 1000 m in a km), so converting is always just multiplying or dividing by a power of ten.

How many millimetres are in one whole metre?

A metre is 100 centimetres, and each centimetre is 10 millimetres. So 100 × 10 = 1000 millimetres in a metre. You can build this fact yourself from the two smaller facts — no need to memorise it separately.

A pencil is 15 centimetres long. How many millimetres is that?

Centimetres are bigger than millimetres, so switching to the smaller unit makes the number grow — you multiply. Since 1 cm = 10 mm, do 15 × 10 = 150 mm.

When you change a measurement from a bigger unit to a smaller unit, what happens to the number?

The real length never changes, but measured in smaller pieces it takes more of them — like pouring one bottle into many little cups. So the number goes up, and you get there by multiplying.

A string is 800 centimetres long. How long is it in metres?

Metres are bigger than centimetres, so switching to the bigger unit makes the number shrink — you divide. Since 1 m = 100 cm, do 800 ÷ 100 = 8 metres.

How many metres is 2.5 kilometres?

Kilometres are bigger than metres, so you multiply by 1000. 2.5 × 1000 = 2500 m. Half a kilometre is 500 m, so 2 km + 0.5 km = 2000 + 500 = 2500 m.
