The meta-analysis put the effect of background sound on reading comprehension at a Hedges's g of −0.21. What does that support?

The credible interval ran from −0.30 to −0.13 and never touched zero, so the cost is real. But a fifth of a standard deviation is a shaved edge, not a collapse.

Why does speech you cannot understand disrupt reading less than speech you can?

Intelligible speech was worse by a further g of −0.12, at ninety-nine percent probability, with loudness and acoustics unchanged. That result is what rules the phonological account out for reading.
