The reliable difference between an early-night dream and a late one is not how strange it is — it is how many words you use. Take the length back out and something real survives: 68 sleepers, woken twice, whose late dreams ran on looser links. And the prefrontal shutdown everyone cites is there all night.

In the 1996 Rome study, what happened when report length was statistically removed?
Casagrande and colleagues found length rose with time asleep; partialling it out removed many inter-stage differences, while bizarreness and visual imagery still separated the stages.

The authors called deactivation of the heteromodal association areas the single feature common to both non-REM and REM sleep, and possibly a defining characteristic of sleep itself. Something constant cannot explain something that varies.
