🎧 Why does background noise help some people focus?

Pool the trials and white noise helps people with ADHD - and measurably hurts everyone else. The most attentive children in one school got worse, and static on a screen worked as well as static in the ears.

Noise helped the inattentive, hurt the hyperactive, and about a third performed worse.

Questions this course answers

The 2024 meta-analysis pooled trials of white and pink noise. What did it find?

The pooled estimates ran in opposite directions: g = 0.249 for ADHD or high-symptom groups, g = -0.212 for non-ADHD comparison groups.

Why does the stochastic resonance curve argue against "more noise is better"?

Benefit rises to a single peak and then decays. "Some noise can help" and "more noise helps more" are different claims, and only the first is supported.

In the 2024 study, white noise laid over the screen helped much the same children as white noise in the ears. Why does that matter?

A benefit that transfers across senses is hard to explain as masking of unwanted sound, and easier to explain as a change in the listener's own level of activation.
