What you’ll learn

  1. Reflecting (Flipping)Reflect shapes across a mirror line, understanding a reflection keeps size but flips direction.A reflection flips a shape across a mirror line, like a mirror image. Every point moves to the same distance on the opposite side. The shape stays the same size but faces the opposite way, and matching mirrored halves make a line of symmetry.
  2. Translating (Sliding)Translate shapes by sliding a set number of squares, and tell translations from reflections.A translation slides a shape to a new position without flipping or turning it, described by how many squares it moves across and up or down. Both reflections and translations keep a shape the same size; only a reflection changes which way it faces.

Questions this course answers

A reflection is like...

A reflection flips a shape like a mirror image.

When you reflect a shape, its size...

A reflection keeps the shape exactly the same size — only its direction flips.

A shape whose two halves are reflections of each other has a...

Matching halves that mirror each other make a line of symmetry.

A translation moves a shape by...

A translation slides a shape without flipping or turning it.

Which move changes which way a shape faces?

A reflection flips the shape, so it faces the opposite way.

After a translation, the shape is...

A translation only slides the shape, so it stays the same size and facing the same way.
