Identify a fraction, name its numerator and denominator, and recognize halves and quarters.A fraction shows equal parts of a whole. The denominator (bottom) counts the total equal parts and the numerator (top) counts how many you have. Halves and quarters are common fractions, and fractions can be placed on a number line.

Different-looking fractions can be equal (equivalent), and fractions with the same denominator are added by adding the top numbers. Fractions appear in cooking, time, and money.
