What you’ll learn

  1. Explain multiplication as repeated addition using equal groups, arrays, factors, and products.Multiplication is a fast way to add equal groups. Arrays show multiplication as rows and columns. The numbers being multiplied are factors, and the answer is the product.
  2. Use the commutative property, times tables, the times-ten pattern, and real-life multiplication.Order does not change a product (commutative property). Times tables build quick recall, multiplying by 10 adds a zero, and multiplication solves everyday problems.

Questions this course answers

What does multiplication really do?

Multiplication is a fast way to add the same number repeatedly, such as 4 times 3 meaning four groups of three.

If you have 5 plates with 2 cookies each, how many cookies total?

Five equal groups of 2 is 5 times 2, which equals 10 cookies.

The answer to a multiplication problem is called the product; 6 and 2 are the factors.

If 3 times 8 equals 24, what does 8 times 3 equal?

The commutative property means order does not matter, so 8 times 3 also equals 24.

What is a quick trick for multiplying a whole number by 10?
