What you’ll learn

  1. Words for OperationsLearn and use the precise words sum, difference, product, and quotient. Each operation's answer has its own exact name: sum for addition, difference for subtraction, product for multiplication, and quotient for division. Using these words tells everyone exactly which operation you mean.
  2. Symbols and ComparingUnderstand that = means balance, and compare numbers using <, >, and =.The equals sign means both sides are worth the same, not 'the answer follows'. To compare, use < for less than and > for greater than, with the point aiming at the smaller number: 3 < 8 and 9 > 4.
  3. Say It PreciselyDescribe calculations precisely using correct math vocabulary.Precise language makes math clear to share and check. Instead of 'put together', say 'find the sum'; instead of 'a bit more', say '2 more than'. Describing 12 ÷ 3 = 4 as 'the quotient of 12 and 3 is 4' leaves no room for confusion.

Questions this course answers

The 'sum' of two numbers is the answer to...

'Sum' is the precise word for the answer to an addition.

The 'product' of 3 and 4 is...

'Product' means the answer to multiplication: 3 × 4 = 12.

The equals sign (=) means...

= shows that the two sides balance — they are worth the same amount.

Which sign correctly compares 8 and 3?

8 is greater than 3, so 8 > 3 — the wide end faces the bigger number.

'Find the difference of 9 and 4' means...

'Difference' is the precise word for subtraction: 9 − 4 = 5.

The 'quotient' of 12 and 3 is...

'Quotient' means the answer to division: 12 ÷ 3 = 4.
