⚖️ Comparing Numbers to 10
Look at two numerals like 4 and 7 and say which is greater and which is less, using the words and symbols mathematicians use.
What you’ll learn
- More, Fewer, or EqualCompare two groups as more, fewer, or equal by matching one to one.To compare groups, match them one for one. A leftover with no partner means that group has more; the other has fewer. When every item has a partner and none are left over, the groups are equal.
- Bigger Numbers Come LaterCompare two written numerals from 1 to 10 to find which is greater or less.Numbers sit in order on a number line. The farther along a number sits, the greater it is, so 7 is greater than 4. If you are unsure, count up — the number you reach last is the greater one.
- The Hungry SymbolsUse >, <, and = and the words 'greater than' and 'less than' to compare numerals. The symbols > and < open their wide side toward the bigger number, like a hungry mouth. '7 > 4' reads 'seven is greater than four,' and '3 < 8' reads 'three is less than eight.' Equal numbers get an = sign.
Questions this course answers
One row has 4 counters, the other has 7. Which row has MORE?
7 is more than 4, so the row of 7 has more counters.
Two rows each have 5 dots that match perfectly. The rows are…
When every dot has a partner and none are left over, the groups are equal.
On a number line, which number is GREATER: 3 or 8?
8 sits farther along the number line than 3, so 8 is greater.
Which number is LESS: 6 or 2?
2 comes before 6 when you count, so 2 is less.
Which symbol makes it true: 7 __ 4 ?
7 is greater than 4, so we use >, with the open side facing 7.
How do you read '3 < 8' out loud?
The open side faces 8, so 3 is less than 8.
