A shipment from Asia arrives three weeks late. Based on this course's argument, where should you look first?

The ocean leg is the most reliable and predictable part of the chain — a ship moving in a straight line with nothing to negotiate. Delay accumulates at the joints, where cargo must change hands, vehicle, owner and database.

Queues with variable arrivals do not degrade gently. As utilisation approaches full, waiting time heads for the ceiling: boxes get buried so retrievals take longer, so the yard clears slower, so it stays fuller. The queue starts feeding itself.

The visible queue is the last link in a chain of invisible ones. Ships anchor because berths are full; berths are full because yards are full; yards are full because the land side — chassis, appointments, drivers, inland warehouse space — has run out.
