The rue d'Enfer collapse of 1774 produced the Inspection Générale des Carrières in 1777, which still maps and props ~300 km of tunnels and constrains what can be built. From 1786 the emptied cemeteries — some six million people — were moved into those quarries.

Charles Marville was hired by the city to photograph the streets before they were destroyed.
- HaussmannExplain what Napoleon III and Haussmann actually did between 1853 and 1870 — and why the sewers matter more than the boulevards.Haussmann's percement — draw the line, expropriate, demolish, build to code — cleared roughly 20,000 buildings and built some 34,000 in seventeen years. Belgrand extended the sewers from ~100 to ~600 km of walkable galleries carrying the clean-water mains, and brought spring water in by aqueduct, breaking the cholera loop. The barricade theory is one motive among several and failed its test in 1871; Haussmann's off-books financing got him dismissed in January 1870.
- The BuildingRead a Haussmannian building — the code that makes the street one object, and the social sorting hidden in the floors.Haussmann's code fixed the façade line, tied height to street width, mandated Lutetian limestone, aligned cornices and required a 45° mansard, so a block is one continuous object with several doors: the street is the unit of design. The old building was a vertical village — étage noble at the second floor, servants under the roof — where classes met on the stairs; the new Paris sorted horizontally by arrondissement instead, pushing the poor east, north, and eventually outside the walls.

Paris has been walled about seven times and each wall became a street; 'boulevard' shares a root with 'bulwark'. The 1860 line is still the city limit.

When Paris needed fast cross-city transport it had to dig the RER underneath from the 1960s.

The Thiers wall came down in 1919–29, its glacis became 'la zone', and the 35-km périphérique was laid on the same line by 1973. The postwar grands ensembles — Sarcelles the archetype — were built beyond the boundary as a genuine rescue and became the most stigmatised addresses in France. Grand Paris Express is ~200 km of orbital metro answering exactly that.
- The City NowUnderstand today's Paris: a city emptying because it is desirable, subtracting cars, cleaning its river, and repairing rather than continuing itself.Paris intra-muros peaked at ~2.9 million in 1921 and is now ~2.1 million and falling, because the 1860 boundary, Haussmann's height code, the quarries and heritage protection together fixed the supply. The city has responded by subtracting cars — Rue de Rivoli given to bikes, riverside expressways turned into walkways, bikes overtaking cars for trips within Paris by 2023 — and spending ~€1.4bn to make the Seine swimmable again for 2024. Notre-Dame was rebuilt exactly, a deliberate statement that the centre is finished.
Questions this course answers
What geographic advantage explains Paris's location beyond simply 'a good river crossing'?
Fords are common; this combination isn't. Paris is the point where the best farmland in Europe drains past the easiest bridge — a natural hub of navigable water, with an island in the middle of it that is a fort you don't have to build.
Why did the Romans build Lutetia on the Left Bank hill rather than on the island?
And both survive: the frigidarium of the baths stands roofed inside the Musée de Cluny, and the Arènes de Lutèce — rediscovered in the 1860s when a tram company dug a depot — is now a neighbourhood park where men play boules on the arena floor.
Why is Paris a single colour?
Notre-Dame, the Louvre, the medieval walls and every Haussmannian façade are the same rock. A photograph of Paris is recognisable from the colour alone because the city is made of the ground it stands on — which is also why it is standing on the holes.
The Inspection Générale des Carrières was created in 1777 and still exists. Why does it matter today?
It was created after the rue d'Enfer dropped some thirty metres into a void in 1774. So one of Paris's signature features — a low, even skyline — is not purely a matter of aesthetic legislation. It is partly a reply to a hole.
Why were the Catacombs created in 1786?
The remains of roughly six million people — more than live in Paris above. The decorative stacking came later, when the quarry inspector Héricart de Thury deliberately built a memorial out of them. It's the essential Paris move: the city consumes itself and rebuilds from the pieces.
What made 1850s central Paris lethal rather than merely unpleasant?
Nobody yet understood the mechanism, but the pattern was visible: the poorest, dampest, densest quarters died in numbers and the airy new western districts largely did not. The Île de la Cité — the city's birthplace — was one of the worst slums in Europe.
