What does this course treat as the real subject of most photographs?
The jump to intentional work is learning to photograph light rather than things. Change the light and the same subject transforms; that's why photographers wait for and shape light rather than chasing subjects.
Why does side light make a subject look more three-dimensional than front light?
Front light fills in shadows and flattens; side light rakes across the surface, and the shadows it casts reveal texture and form. The shadows are the information that makes a flat image feel sculptural.
What actually determines whether light is hard or soft?
Hardness isn't brightness. A small or distant source (noon sun, bare flash) casts sharp shadows; a large or nearby source (overcast sky, window, softbox) lights each point from many angles and softens the shadows.
A candlelit dinner looks magical to your eye but your photo's warm glow could be neutralized by white balance. What's the intentional move?
White balance can correct a color cast to make whites white, but sometimes the color IS the mood. Like exposure, it's a choice: correct it when accuracy serves the picture, keep it when the color of the light is the point.
The shadow side of a window-lit portrait is too dark. What's the simplest fix?
You don't need a second light — you need to reflect the first. A white wall, sheet, or board on the shadow side bounces window light into the shadows. Understanding that one light plus a bounce equals two is the foundation of lighting.
Beyond magnification, what is the more important thing a focal length choice decides?
Focal length sets angle of view: wide lenses sweep in context ('here is the world this happened in'), long lenses reach across distance to isolate one slice ('look only at this'). That's a narrative decision, not just zoom.
