According to the course, what does auto mode most fundamentally take away from you?
Auto mode optimizes for a competent average exposure of an average scene. What it can't know is your intent — the blur you wanted, the mood you were after. The course is about replacing the camera's guess with your decision.
Why do photographers often prefer to protect highlights, even letting a scene run slightly dark?
The two failures aren't symmetrical: a blown highlight is gone for good, but darkened shadows usually still hold faint, recoverable data (though lifting them lifts noise). Hence the habit of protecting the bright end.
What makes the three exposure controls a 'triangle' rather than just three brightness dials?
If they only set brightness, any combination would do. The craft exists because each control has a second job (aperture→depth of field, shutter→motion, ISO→noise), so choosing an exposure means choosing which side effects you want.
You open your aperture by one stop for a blurrier background. To keep the exposure the same, what can you do?
A stop is a doubling or halving of light, shared by all three controls. Opening the aperture one stop doubles the light, so cutting the shutter one stop (halving the light) restores the same total exposure — the look changes, the brightness doesn't.
You want a portrait with a soft, blurred background. Which aperture, and what's the catch?
Shallow depth of field — the blurred-background look — comes from a wide aperture (small f-number like f/2). That wide opening also gathers a lot of light, so in bright conditions you pay it back with a faster shutter or lower ISO.
A silky, blurred waterfall with sharp rocks around it requires what shutter choice?
The blur comes from leaving the shutter open long enough for the water to move during the exposure. The stationary rocks stay sharp; only the moving water streaks. It usually needs a tripod because such slow speeds also blur handheld shake.
