How did a single geological event shape India's three great physical zones?
About 50 million years ago the Indian plate rammed into Asia and is still pushing north. That crash buckled up the Himalayas; rivers off those mountains laid down the fertile plains; and the ancient, stable core of the plate remained as the Deccan plateau — mountains, plains, plateau from one collision.
Historically, how did the Himalayas shape Indian civilization?
The mountain wall isolated the subcontinent enough for a distinct civilization to form, forced most invaders and traders through northwestern passes, and — crucially — feed the great rivers with snowmelt that waters the northern plains where most people live.
