The land is also steeply tilted: within roughly 100 km you can go from the Mediterranean shore to Jerusalem at ~750 m and then down to the Dead Sea at ~430 m below sea level, the lowest exposed land on earth. Smallness and that vertical drop set up the geography, water, and settlement patterns that follow.

The transferable skill is distinguishing a fact from a claim — Israel declared Jerusalem its capital (fact) versus Jerusalem is Israel's capital (a claim most states qualify) — and being able to say what is agreed and what is contested without flattening either.

Israel is about 15 km wide at its narrowest point. Why does the course treat that as the country's 'operating condition' rather than a piece of trivia?
Israel is far from the world's smallest country, and the narrowness has nothing to do with desert or airports. The point is that at 15 km across, everything is adjacent to everything: there is no depth to trade for time, no slack in the water budget, and no way to isolate a decision from its neighbours.
Within roughly 100 km you can travel from a Mediterranean beach to Jerusalem to the Dead Sea shore. What is the approximate vertical range of that trip?
Jerusalem sits at roughly 750 m on the highland ridge, and the Dead Sea shore is about 430 m below sea level — the lowest exposed land on earth. Nearly 1,200 m of range inside a morning's drive.
Why does Israel's geography come in four north–south ribbons rather than being arranged some other way?
The ribbons are tectonic, not administrative or volcanic. The Arabian plate slides north past the African plate along the Dead Sea Transform; where the fault steps sideways the crust between drops, forming the rift valley. The uplifted rim is the hill country, and sediment shed off it made the coastal plain.
Haifa gets about 550 mm of rain a year; Beersheba, 170 km south, gets about 200 mm; Eilat about 25 mm. What is the main consequence?
The rainfall gradient is a cliff, not a slope, and the line runs roughly across Beersheba. North of it, crops can live on rain; south of it, nothing grows without imported water. That single line explains why over half the land holds under a tenth of the people.
What was the central engineering challenge of the National Water Carrier?
Lake Kinneret sits about 210 m below sea level, so the water has to be raised — roughly 250 m in one stage at the Sapir pumping station — before pipelines and gravity can move it 130 km to the coastal plain and northern Negev. The Kinneret is fresh water; desalination came decades later and from the sea.
Israeli reverse-osmosis plants brought the cost of desalinated water down dramatically. What contributed most to that beyond sheer scale?
Reverse osmosis' energy cost is the 60–80 atmospheres of pressure required. Energy recovery devices capture that pressure from the brine stream on its way out and hand it back to the feed, recovering the large majority of the pumping energy — which is a big part of how Sorek contracted around US$0.58 per cubic metre.
