The Rulebook You Can't ReciteEstablish that speakers possess precise unconscious grammatical knowledge, using the wug test and adjective ordering as demonstrations that the knowledge is rule-based rather than memorised.Every fluent speaker carries an enormous rulebook they were never taught and cannot state. Berko's 1958 wug test showed that most preschoolers (76%) and nearly all first-graders (97%) could pluralise a word they had never heard — proof the knowledge is generative rather than a list. English adjective order is a second demonstration: speakers feel a preferred sequence they almost never can name. Linguistics is the project of writing this rulebook down.
  2. Why the Science Describes and Does Not CorrectExplain the descriptive/prescriptive distinction, show that famous usage rules were invented rather than discovered, and establish why describing is the only coherent scientific stance.Linguistics describes what speakers actually do rather than legislating what they should, for the same reason botany does not correct flowers. Famous prescriptive rules — the split-infinitive ban, the preposition-stranding ban — were installed by named writers, not found in English; the Latin story often told about the split infinitive is neater than the record. Standard varieties are not linguistically superior but socially selected.

The aspiration of English /p/ in 'pin' but not 'spin' shows the deepest point: speakers execute a precise phonetic rule with perfect consistency while being completely unable to hear the distinction they are making.
  4. Phonology: Why Your Ear Throws Information AwayIntroduce the phoneme/allophone distinction, explain complementary distribution, and show that a language's sound categories are a filter learned in infancy.A phoneme is a category that can distinguish words in a given language; an allophone is one of its predictable physical realisations. Because [p] and [pʰ] never contrast in English and appear in complementary distribution, they are heard as one sound — while in Hindi they are separate phonemes. Werker and Tees (1984) showed that most 6–8-month-olds still hear non-native contrasts their parents fail, and that by 10–12 months the filter has closed.
  5. Morphology: The Machine for Making WordsIntroduce the morpheme, distinguish inflection from derivation, and use productivity to show that vocabulary is generated rather than listed.Words are built from morphemes — the smallest units carrying meaning or function — combined by rules that speakers apply to items they have never encountered. Inflection adjusts a word for grammatical context without changing its category; derivation builds new words, often changing category. Productivity is the test that matters: a productive rule applies to novel forms, which is why a vocabulary is a generative machine rather than a list, and why 'un-Google-able' is instantly interpretable.

Syntax: Sentences Have Shapes, Not Just OrdersShow that sentences are hierarchically structured rather than linear, using ambiguity and recursion as evidence, and separate grammaticality from meaningfulness.A sentence is not a sequence of words but a nested structure, which is why identical word orders can carry two meanings: the ambiguity lies in which structure the words are hung on. Recursion — embedding a structure inside another of the same type — lets a finite grammar generate unlimited sentences, which is why no language has a longest sentence. Chomsky's 'colorless green ideas sleep furiously' establishes the field's key separation: grammaticality is independent of meaningfulness.
  7. Meaning: What You Said and What You MeantDistinguish semantics from pragmatics, introduce Grice's cooperative principle and implicature, and show that literal meaning systematically underdetermines communication.Semantics concerns what sentences mean; pragmatics concerns what speakers mean by them, and the gap between the two is where most communication actually happens. Grice's insight is that inference across this gap is systematic: because listeners assume speakers are being cooperative, saying less than expected reliably implies something unsaid. Implicature is defeasible and calculable rather than encoded, which is why 'some' implies 'not all' without meaning it.
  8. The Rulebook Changes, and It Changes LawfullyShow that language change is regular rather than random using Grimm's Law, and explain why change is not decay.Sound change is startlingly systematic: Grimm's Law describes a set of consonant shifts that applied across the whole Germanic vocabulary rather than word by word, which is what made systematic historical reconstruction possible. Because change is regular and every stage of a language is a complete grammar, the recurring intuition that language is decaying has no coherent formulation — the complaint is a constant of literate cultures, and the changes complained about become the standard the next generation defends.
  9. Every Variety Has a GrammarApply the course's machinery to dialect variation, showing that stigmatised varieties are rule-governed systems, and resolve the through-line.The tools built across this course — unconscious rules, phonemes, productivity, structure — apply identically to every variety of every language, and applying them to stigmatised varieties reliably reveals systematic grammars rather than errors. African American English is the most-studied case: its features, including the much-mocked 'habitual be', follow strict rules that speakers apply consistently and that mark a distinction the standard cannot make. Judgements about varieties track the social position of their speakers rather than any property of the grammar.

Questions this course answers

Why was it essential that 'wug' was a made-up word?

That's the whole design. With a real word, 'dogs' proves nothing — the child may have heard it a thousand times. Invent the word and there's no memory to consult, so any plural at all is proof of a generative rule. And they got the voicing right too.

English speakers say 'cats' with an [s] and 'dogs' with a [z] without ever deciding to. What does this show about grammatical knowledge?

It's not sloppiness or memorisation: it's a rule conditioned on whether the preceding sound is voiced. Most preschoolers already had the /s/~/z/ half; almost no adult who uses it hourly can state it.

According to linguistics, what distinguishes a real rule of a language from a prescriptive one?

Adjective order needs no enforcement because it's genuinely in the grammar. The split-infinitive ban needs constant enforcement and still fails — which is exactly what a rule looks like when it was installed by style guides rather than found in speakers.

Why does linguistics hold that standard varieties are not linguistically superior to non-standard ones?

Standard French is essentially the Paris dialect; nothing in its phonology won that competition. The prestige is entirely real and has real consequences — it just isn't a property of the grammar.

Why can English speakers reliably produce the difference between the p in 'pin' and the p in 'spin' but not hear it?

The difference is large enough to move a strip of paper, and in Hindi it separates distinct words. But English never uses it to tell words apart, so it's filtered out before you notice — a rule executed perfectly by a mouth whose owner can't perceive it.

Two sounds appear in complementary distribution — each only ever in environments where the other never occurs. What does this tell you?

If you can predict which appears from the surroundings, no choice is being made and no information is carried — provided the sounds are similar enough to be variants of one thing. That's English [p] and [pʰ]. Contrast requires the possibility of both in the same slot.
