📍 Describing Where Things Are
Learn the position words — above, below, next to, between, behind, and in front — to say exactly where things are.
What you’ll learn
- Above and BelowUse the position words 'above' and 'below' to describe where things are.Position words tell us where things are. Above means higher up, over something, like a bird above a tree. Below means lower down, under something, like a fish below a boat. Pointing up for above and down for below helps you remember.
- Next To and BetweenUse the position words 'next to' and 'between' to describe where things are.Next to means right beside something, side by side, like a cup next to a plate. Between means in the middle, with something on each side, like jam between two slices of bread. Between always needs two things hugging the middle.
- Behind and In FrontUse the position words 'behind' and 'in front of' to describe where things are.Behind means at the back, out of sight, like a cat hiding behind a couch. In front means at the front, where you can see it, like a teacher in front of the class. Together with above, below, next to, and between, these words describe exactly where anything is.
