Rock That Cooled in the DarkExplain where Yosemite's granite came from — subduction, stalled plutons, slow deep cooling — and why its later unloading sets up every shape in the park.Everything at Tunnel View is one material: granite from the Sierra Nevada batholith, emplaced ~114-86 million years ago as plutons that stalled 5-10 km down and cooled slowly enough to grow visible crystals. The volcanic range above it eroded entirely away and the Sierra block tilted upward. The key consequence: rock that formed under thousands of atmospheres of confining pressure is now unloaded — and that is what shapes it next.
  2. Why Half Dome Is a DomeCorrect the 'glacier sheared off the other half' myth and explain domes and walls as products of sheeting joints versus vertical joints.Only about 20% of Half Dome's original mass is gone, and the glaciers topped out roughly 700-900 feet below its summit — the ice never reached the face. Domes form because unloaded granite expands and cracks parallel to the ground surface, peeling off in shells until convex shapes emerge. Sheer faces like El Capitan and Half Dome's northwest wall are pre-existing vertical joint planes that ice and freeze-thaw exploited.

The Argument About the ValleyUse the U-shaped valley to explain glacial excavation, the Muir-Whitney dispute, hanging-valley waterfalls, and the lakebed floor.State Geologist Josiah Whitney insisted the valley floor had collapsed and dismissed Muir as a 'mere sheepherder'; Muir read the U-shaped cross-section, glacial polish, erratics and moraines correctly, and found a living glacier in 1871. François Matthes's 1930 USGS study confirmed him. Because the thick trunk glacier cut far deeper than side-canyon ice, tributaries were left hanging — producing Yosemite Falls (2,425 ft) and Bridalveil (620 ft) — and the famously flat floor is sediment filling ancient Lake Yosemite behind a terminal moraine.
  4. 1864: The Idea Before the IdeaExplain why the Yosemite Grant preceded and enabled the national park idea, how photographs carried it, and how the valley was emptied of the people who shaped it.Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant on June 30, 1864, mid-Civil War, ceding the Valley and Mariposa Grove to California 'for public use, resort, and recreation' and 'inalienable for all time' — the first time any government protected land purely for its beauty. Carleton Watkins's 1861 mammoth-plate photographs made the case, prefiguring the Hayden Survey's role at Yellowstone. The Ahwahneechee, who had kept the valley open with deliberate burning for millennia, were driven out by the Mariposa Battalion in 1851; Yosemite became a national park in 1890 and the state grant returned to federal control in 1906.

Muir: What He Won and What He LostTrace Muir's campaign from the 1890 park to the Hetch Hetchy defeat, and explain the conservation-versus-preservation split it created.Muir grasped that protecting the valley while leaving its watersheds to 'hoofed locusts' protected nothing; his 1889 trip with editor Robert Underwood Johnson led to Yosemite National Park in 1890, the Sierra Club in 1892, and the 1903 camping trip that shaped Theodore Roosevelt. He then lost Hetch Hetchy: Congress passed the Raker Act in 1913 and O'Shaughnessy Dam was completed in 1923. The fight split conservation (Pinchot: wise use, greatest good for the greatest number) from preservation (Muir: intrinsic worth) — and helped produce the National Park Service in 1916.
  6. The Big TreesExplain giant sequoia fire adaptation as a reproductive strategy, and why fire suppression nearly ended the species' regeneration.The Mariposa Grove holds about 500 mature sequoias, including the ~1,800-2,700-year-old Grizzly Giant. Bark up to two feet thick, tannin-rich and resin-free, lets the parent survive the fire that opens its long-closed cones, burns litter down to the mineral soil its seed requires, and kills the shade-casting white fir its sun-demanding seedlings cannot grow under. A half-century of suppression left groves with every age class but the young; Yosemite began prescribed burning in 1970 — among the NPS's first such programs — and completed a $40M Mariposa Grove restoration in 2018.

Granite and LightExplain why the valley's geology makes it photograph and climb the way it does, from Adams's visualization to El Capitan's milestones.The valley's east-west trench delivers raking dawn and dusk light across pale, bare, ice-polished granite, while waterfall mist and pooled fog supply depth. Adams's 1927 'Monolith, the Face of Half Dome' — a deep red filter chosen to render a black sky — introduced his method of visualization; he served the Sierra Club for 37 years and his portfolio helped create Kings Canyon in 1940. El Capitan's clean vertical joints made it climbing's proving ground: 47 days on the Nose in 1958, Lynn Hill's first free ascent in 1993, the Dawn Wall in 2015, Honnold's 3h56m free solo in 2017, and a 1:58 speed record in 2018.

Four Million People, Seven Square MilesExplain why the crowding is a consequence of glacial geometry, what reservations are really arbitrating, and how to actually visit well.About 95% of Yosemite's 1,187 square miles is roadless wilderness, yet nearly all of its ~4 million annual visitors go to the roughly 7-square-mile valley — a glacial trench with steep walls and one road that cannot be widened. Peak-hours entry reservations and the Half Dome cable lottery (since 2010) ration access, arbitrating the 1864 grant's own tension between 'public use' and 'inalienable for all time.' The escape is free: sunrise and evening empty the famous pullouts, and Tioga Road climbs to Tuolumne Meadows — the high country Muir actually fought for — at a fraction of the crowding.

Questions this course answers

Why can you see individual crystals in Yosemite's granite with the naked eye?

Crystal size is a cooling clock. Lava that reaches the surface chills in hours and stays fine-grained; magma that stalls kilometres down cools for millennia, which is exactly what makes granite granite.

Yosemite's granite formed under kilometres of overlying rock. Why does its later exhumation matter so much?

The unloading is the setup for everything after. Yosemite's mountains aren't built up — they're what's left after the overburden was carved off, and the rock's response to losing that squeeze produces the park's signature shapes.

What's wrong with the story that a glacier sheared away Half Dome's missing half?

The 'whole' dome you're picturing never existed, and Half Dome's summit stood above the ice as an island the entire glaciation. Whatever shaped the face, it wasn't ice cutting through it.

Why does the same granite produce rounded domes in some places and sheer 3,000-foot walls in others?

Same rock, same forces, different fractures. Once you look for the joints, Yosemite stops being a random collection of famous shapes and becomes a map of where the granite was cracked and where it wasn't.

Yosemite Valley's cross-section is a broad U rather than a V. What does that shape reveal?

The shape tells you the tool. Muir — dismissed by the State Geologist as a 'mere sheepherder' — read it correctly, and backed it with polish, erratics, moraines and a living glacier he found in 1871.

Why is Yosemite Falls 2,425 feet tall instead of joining the Merced at river level?

The waterfalls aren't a separate feature that happens to coexist with the cliffs — they're the same fact seen from another angle. The glacier cut the main valley deeper than everything draining into it, so everything draining into it has to fall.
