- How a Square-Rigger WorkedUnderstand how a full-rigged ship's masts, sails, and rigging turned wind into controlled forward motion.Square-riggers carried square sails on yards across three or more masts. Standing rigging held the masts up while running rigging worked the sails, which were named in a precise vocabulary the crew memorized. Sails were set from the largest courses upward, and men worked aloft on foot-ropes in dangerous conditions to set and furl them.

- The Great VoyagesRecount the first circumnavigation under Magellan and Elcano and Cook's Pacific voyages, with honest human cost.Magellan set out in 1519 and found the strait to the Pacific but was killed in the Philippines; only the Victoria under Elcano completed the first circumnavigation in 1522 with about 18 of the original crew. Two centuries later James Cook charted vast stretches of the Pacific with new precision, keeping scurvy at bay, before his death in Hawaii in 1779.
- Naval Warfare Under SailExplain line-of-battle tactics, broadside gunnery, and the significance of Trafalgar and HMS Victory.Fleets fought in a single line so each ship could fire its broadside clear of friends, in grinding artillery duels decided by rate of fire and seamanship. At Trafalgar in 1805 Nelson broke the allied line for a decisive British victory but was killed. His flagship HMS Victory survives at Portsmouth as the oldest commissioned naval ship.
- The Clipper ShipsDescribe the clipper ships, their races, the surviving Cutty Sark, and why the age of sail ended.Clippers traded cargo capacity for extreme speed, racing tea and gold-rush cargoes around the world and drawing crowds to the great tea races. The Cutty Sark survives as the sole example of her kind. Reliable steamships and the 1869 Suez Canal, unusable by sailing ships, brought the age of sail to a close.
