Hobson and McCarley proposed in 1977 that the brainstem fires largely random signals during REM, and the higher brain synthesizes them into a narrative. It's an influential hypothesis, not settled fact, and it broke sharply from Freud's wish-fulfillment view.
What does the science say about dreams predicting the future?
There is no credible evidence that dreams predict the future. We have many dreams and remember them selectively, so an occasional match to real life is coincidence our pattern-seeking minds latch onto, not precognition.
