If low oxygen were the primary trigger, supplying pure oxygen should reduce yawning. Its failure to do so—along with the carbon-dioxide result—undermines that respiratory explanation.
Why can contagious yawning not be used as a simple test of empathy?
The same outward result can arise from several perceptual, motor, social, and situational factors. Mixed findings make it invalid to infer a person's empathic capacity from one missed yawn.
