The inspiratory spasm begins before the airway closes. The sound comes from air meeting that closure, so it is the final audible consequence of the motor sequence.

A reflex arc separates detection, coordination, and action. Multiple sensory inputs can therefore converge on one recognizable diaphragm-and-glottis output.
Why is it scientifically reasonable to know how hiccups happen without knowing what they are for?
Describing a working circuit does not establish why it evolved or persists. Several origin hypotheses fit parts of the evidence, but none has been demonstrated as the universal function.
