- There Is No AwaySee the waste system as a logistics problem, and meet the course's argument: nothing is thrown away, and containment is a machine someone must keep running.A packer truck is superb at stopping every few metres and terrible at motorways, holding only a few tonnes — so waste goes first to a transfer station, where a tipping floor consolidates many small loads into one large one. Because consolidation is the expensive part and marginal distance is cheap, waste travels much further than people expect, which is why landfills became bigger, fewer and more distant. Roughly half of US municipal solid waste is landfilled (146.1 of 292.4 million tons in 2018) and 34.6 million tons combusted with energy recovery.
- The Dump Is DeadUnderstand that Subtitle D and its equivalents changed what a landfill IS — from a place to an engineered containment structure — and how one is actually operated.Open dumps let rain make leachate that reached groundwater and let buried organics make methane that migrated into basements; this was universal practice until recently. RCRA Subtitle D (revised 1991, 40 CFR Part 258) and comparable rules elsewhere redefined a landfill as a structure with a designed bottom, cap, drainage, gas collection, monitoring and mandated post-closure care — closer to a reservoir dam than a hole. Landfills are built and filled in lined cells at a small working face, compacted hard because capacity is sold as volume rather than tonnes, and covered daily to control litter, smell and vermin.
- The Liner: Building a Bathtub on PurposeUnderstand the composite liner as two materials with complementary vices, and the drainage layer as the thing that makes the liner work.Subtitle D requires a composite liner: an upper geomembrane, typically 60 mil HDPE (minimum 30 mil for other approved materials), over at least two feet of compacted soil with hydraulic conductivity no greater than 1 × 10⁻⁷ cm/s. The membrane is essentially impermeable but is welded on site and will have defects; the clay is permeable but seamless — so the membrane makes the clay's permeability irrelevant over almost all the area while the clay makes the membrane's defects nearly harmless, cutting leakage by orders of magnitude versus the single clay liners used before 1991. Above it, a leachate collection layer exists to keep the liquid head small, because a liner leaks in proportion to the pressure on it.
- Leachate, and the Problem That Never EndsUnderstand leachate as a rainfall problem, the cap as the thing that starves it, and post-closure care as the point where containment becomes a permanent obligation.Leachate is overwhelmingly rain that percolated through the waste, so the weather rather than the waste sets the size of the problem; it is chemically variable, strong, and changes with the age of the cell. The cap's primary job is therefore to keep rain OUT — cutting the supply — and it also makes gas collection work and lets the site become a park, as at Fresh Kills. US post-closure care is funded for a Congressionally specified 30 years, a figure critics call a bond term rather than a half-life and industry defends as reflecting genuinely declining emissions; what is not disputed is that containment converts a pollution event into a maintenance obligation handed to people who never generated the waste.
- The Landfill Is Slowly Digesting ItselfUnderstand landfill gas as anaerobic digestion at scale, the capture hierarchy from flaring to upgrading, and the live dispute over how much escapes.Sealed from oxygen, buried organics are broken down by a different microbial consortium whose output is roughly half CO₂ and half methane — making a landfill a digester that produces gas for decades. EPA reports MSW landfills as the third-largest source of human-related methane emissions in the US, about 14.4% in 2022. Gas is collected by vertical wells under vacuum and then flared (converting methane to far weaker CO₂ — the cheapest large climate win), burned for energy (a wet, siloxane-laden fuel that glazes engines with silica), or upgraded to renewable natural gas. How much escapes is genuinely contested: inventories use modelled capture efficiencies, while aerial and satellite surveys have found many individual sites emitting well above the model, with a Harvard-led analysis concluding EPA understates landfill methane.
- Burning ItUnderstand waste-to-energy as mass burn plus an air pollution control train, and be able to state the ash and put-or-pay objections fairly.Mass burn takes unsorted waste onto a moving grate, raising steam for power and often district heat — which is why the economics work far better in northern Europe than North America — and destroying organics that would otherwise make landfill methane for thirty years. Early incinerators genuinely did emit dioxins, and what changed is the back end: scrubbers, activated carbon, bag filters and sustained high combustion temperature, though opponents fairly note this depends on enforcement rather than physics. Burning concentrates rather than eliminates: bottom ash is the largely inert bulk, while fly ash is small by mass, usually classified as hazardous, and still needs containment — and put-or-pay contracts guaranteeing minimum tonnage can make a successful recycling programme into a financial penalty.
- Recycling, HonestlyGet an honest, material-by-material answer on recycling: how a MRF works, why rates vary so wildly, what National Sword revealed, and why wishcycling is harmful.A MRF sorts single-stream material by exploiting a different physical property at each stage — shape (disc screens), density (air), magnetism (steel), conductivity (eddy current separators throwing aluminium off the belt), chemistry (near-infrared optical sorters) — and its output is a bale, which is a commodity sold on a moving market. US EPA 2018 rates show the spread that is the whole story: corrugated boxes 96.5%, paper and paperboard packaging 80.9%, aluminium cans 50.4%, HDPE natural bottles 29.3%, PET bottles and jars 29.1%, all plastics 8.7% — because cardboard is one material with a hungry industry, while 'plastic' is a family of incompatible polymers that only works when it arrives as clean single-polymer bottles, and degrades in the loop. China's 2018 National Sword banned many scrap imports and imposed a practically unattainable 0.5% contamination limit, revealing that much of what we called recycling was exporting; wishcycling contaminates bales, tangles machines and starts fires, so the correct rule is 'when in doubt, throw it out'.
- The Only Free MoveLand the through-line via the waste hierarchy: everything below the top rung is damage control, food is the biggest available win, and EPR is the only lever that reaches the decision.The waste hierarchy ranks prevent, reuse, recycle, recover, dispose — and its funding is exactly inverted, because prevention is the only rung that isn't a business. Food is the largest component of landfilled US MSW (~24% in 2018), is wet so it makes leachate, and buried anaerobically makes methane — so diverting it to aerobic composting or sealed anaerobic digestion is the biggest and most boring available win, in contrast to the photogenic plastics problem. Extended producer responsibility is the only intervention that reaches the top of the hierarchy, by attaching the end-of-life bill to the producer who chose the packaging; the course's close insists the engineered landfill is a real, invisible achievement and that the honest position is neither nihilism nor complacency.

Why does your rubbish usually go to a transfer station rather than straight to the landfill?
Collection wants many small vehicles moving slowly; haulage wants few large ones moving fast. The transfer station is the joint between them — the same reason a shipping port exists.
Why does waste often travel much further than people expect?
The economics of consolidation dominate. This drives the whole shape of the system: bigger, fewer, more distant landfills, plus barge and rail transfer where geography allows — and it's why cross-border waste export is usually arithmetic rather than scandal.
What did RCRA Subtitle D (revised 1991) and its international equivalents fundamentally change?
That's the pivot of the course. A modern landfill has more in common with a reservoir dam than a hole — and once you commit to containment, a chain of obligations follows that's surprisingly hard to escape.
Why does a landfill operator care so intensely about compaction?
Airspace is the product being sold. That's why a machine exists whose only purpose on Earth is driving back and forth over rubbish on steel spiked wheels, and why operators make several passes and measure the density they achieve.
Why is a composite liner (geomembrane over compacted clay) better than either material alone?
They have precisely complementary vices. Liquid finding a defect in the membrane meets clay pressed into intimate contact beneath it — it can't spread out and use the clay's whole area, only seep through the small patch under the hole, at clay's miserable rate.
What is the leachate collection layer's real job?
Ponding liquid turns a small defect into a real leak by supplying a driving head. Regulations typically cap the depth at about a foot. The landfill isn't a bathtub — it's a bathtub with the plug out and a pump running.
