What is the course's central reframing of what watercolor is?
Watercolor moves on its own; the water and gravity 'get a vote.' The whole approach is partnering with the medium — setting up conditions and letting water do half the work — rather than forcing it into submission.
Why must watercolor be painted light-to-dark, unlike opaque media?
Transparency means each layer acts like tinted glass. You can't cover a dark with a light, so you lay pale washes first and build darks on top, saving the deepest darks for last. The order is forced by the physics.
In traditional watercolor, how do you create a pure white highlight?
There is no white paint in traditional watercolor; white is paper you never painted. Because you can't cover mistakes or add light on top, whites must be planned and protected from the start — once gone, they're gone.

When laying a flat wash, why do you tilt the paper and keep a 'bead' moving down the page?
Tilting lets gravity collect paint into a shiny bead at the stroke's lower edge; you pick it up with each new stroke and carry it down, keeping the edge wet and never going back. The smooth wash comes from cooperating with gravity.
