Handling, storage, protection, taxation, markets, merchants, banks and courts pile up there in sequence, assembling a city out of pure logistics. Harbours, fords, fall lines, portages, passes and oases are all this one machine in different terrain.

The lowest bridging point is uniquely valuable because it forces land traffic and sea traffic to meet at one spot, as the Romans found at the Thames. The crossing that founded London has long since ceased to be scarce, yet the city is thickest exactly where the bottleneck was.
- The Fall LineUnderstand the head of navigation and the fall line, and why they produce industrial cities in rows.Where a river drops off hard rock onto soft coastal sediment, boats can go no further, forcing a break of bulk at the head of navigation — and the same falls supply water power. That combination lets you unload, process and reload within a few hundred yards. On the US eastern seaboard the Fall Line produced Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Richmond, Raleigh, Columbia, Augusta and Macon independently, spaced by geology rather than plan; Minneapolis did the same at St. Anthony Falls.
- The HarbourKnow what makes a harbour usable, and why coastline alone is worth nothing to trade.A port needs shelter from swell, depth close to shore, a rich accessible hinterland, and ideally year-round ice-free operation. Hong Kong, San Francisco Bay, Sydney's Port Jackson and Halifax each score on those counts — San Francisco notably occupying the one gap in hundreds of kilometres of cliff. A long coast without those qualities leaves a country effectively landlocked with a sea view.
- High Ground and Narrow GroundUnderstand defensive siting and the funnelling power of passes and gaps.Before movement, settlements needed to survive, which favours steep, isolated ground with water inside the walls — the Athenian Acropolis, and Edinburgh's crag-and-tail, where hard volcanic rock resisted glaciers that left a ramp behind it, giving the Royal Mile its shape. Defence pulls uphill and trade pulls downhill, which is why so many cities have a castle above and a market below. Passes concentrate trade and armies alike, so pass towns like Innsbruck are market and fortress at once.
- Where the Water IsSee water as the one non-negotiable site requirement, and Timbuktu as a break of bulk in sand.Water is needed daily and weighs a kilogram a litre, so pre-industrial settlements had to sit on it — a constraint invisible in wet countries and absolute in dry ones, as at Damascus on the Barada, or Egypt's population strung along the Nile. Desert routes run from water to water because a route that misses a well kills you. Timbuktu, where Saharan camel caravans meet Niger canoes, is a harbour in every respect but the sea — and grew rich and scholarly on that transfer.
- Cities That Outgrew Their ReasonUnderstand path dependence — and the honest limit on it — through Chicago and Buffalo.Chicago began as the Chicago Portage, a few muddy miles linking the Great Lakes and Mississippi watersheds; the I&M Canal of 1848 and then the railroads erased that advantage entirely, yet the city boomed because the traffic and capital the portage had gathered drew the railroads to the city itself. Sunk capital, network effects and institutions pin cities in place regardless of founding logic. But Buffalo, which lost its Erie Canal role and never replaced the function, shows that inertia buys time rather than a future.
- Terrible Sites, Great CitiesExamine cities on hostile or arbitrary sites, and the political logic that put them there.Venice's lagoon offered no bedrock, farmland or fresh water — and that was the point, being too shallow for warships and too wet for cavalry, a defensive site inverted. St Petersburg was placed on a frozen marsh by Peter the Great's will and built at severe human cost, while Mexico City sits on the drained bed of Lake Texcoco, subsiding by metres as it pumps out its own groundwater and amplifying earthquake shaking. Planned capitals like Washington, Brasília, Canberra and Abuja were sited on unremarkable ground precisely so they would be nobody's city.
- The Cities With No Feature At AllUnderstand central place theory as a second, independent logic for settlement location, and its real limits.On a flat uniform plain there is no barrier to break at, yet towns still appear at regular intervals. Christaller's 1933 theory explains this through threshold (customers needed to sustain a service) and range (how far people will travel for it), which nest services into a hierarchy and, geometrically, into hexagons. The assumptions — flat, evenly populated, transport equal in all directions — hold nowhere exactly, and the theory cannot explain any feature-driven city; but it identifies a genuinely separate logic that real maps show fighting with break of bulk.
- Reading Any City Off a MapApply a repeatable procedure for reading any city's location, and consolidate the course's argument.Find the barrier first, then name what changes there, then — if there is no barrier — check whether the town is an evenly spaced central place, and finally ask whether the founding reason still exists. Worked through Innsbruck, Richmond and Timbuktu, the answer to that last question is usually no, and Timbuktu shows that the compensating function does not always arrive. A map of cities is therefore a map of old problems: a record of where movement was hard and water could be found, drawn by people solving difficulties that no longer exist.
Questions this course answers
The course says London's site is ordinary but its situation is superb. What does this distinction mean?
Site is the patch of ground — for London, some gravel hills in a marsh, which is nothing special. Situation is position in the network — the bridgeable head of a tideway reaching into a rich lowland, which is one of the best in Europe.
Why does the course say a superb site with no situation stays a village?
The ground can be perfect — dry, defensible, watered — and if nothing needs to pass through, nothing will. Growth comes from being on the way to somewhere, which is situation, not site.
Why does a break of bulk tend to generate a city rather than just a loading dock?
Each need summons the next: porters need quays, stored goods need warehouses, stored wealth needs guards, waiting cargo may as well be sold — so markets, then merchants, then banks, then courts. A city falls out of the logistics.
Why does the course call harbours, fords, fall lines, passes and oases 'one machine in different clothes'?
The barrier's material — water, rock, gradient, sand — is incidental. What matters is that the vehicle can't pass, so the load must transfer, and the transfer point collects everything.
Why is the lowest bridging point of a river so unusually valuable?
Downstream you can't bridge; upstream ships can't reach. At the lowest bridging point the road must cross and the ships must stop — a break of bulk with a road junction on top. There's generally only one per river.
Why did fall-line locations become manufacturing towns rather than just market towns?
Two gifts on the same hundred metres. You take raw material off the incoming boats, process it with the falls, and load it onto outgoing boats — without moving it more than a few hundred yards.
