In this course, what does the 'volume' of a box measure?

Volume is the amount of space inside a solid — how many unit cubes would fill it. It is not weight, edge length, or the area of one face.

A box's bottom layer is 5 cubes long and 4 rows deep. How many unit cubes cover that one layer?

A layer is cubes-in-a-row × number-of-rows = 5 × 4 = 20. Adding 5 + 4 would only count two edges, not the whole floor.

Why does length × width × height give the volume of a rectangular prism?

The formula is a fast way to count unit cubes: length × width fills one floor, and multiplying by height stacks that floor as many times as the box is tall.

Why is volume measured in 'cubic' units like cm³ instead of plain centimetres?

Volume fills space in three directions, so its unit is a cube (length × width × height). The small 3 in cm³ shows three directions were multiplied together.

You double the length, width, and height of a cube. How many times bigger is its volume?

Each of the three directions doubles the cube count, so the volume multiplies by 2 × 2 × 2 = 8. For example 2×2×2 = 8 cubes becomes 4×4×4 = 64 cubes.

Why can't you use length × width × height to find the volume of a basketball?

The formula counts cubes stacked in a neat grid, which only fits a true rectangular prism. A round ball leaves gaps between cubes, so a different method is needed.
