Numbers Are BuiltRead numbers by place value and partition them into hundreds, tens and ones.Every number has structure: 342 is 3 hundreds, 4 tens and 2 ones, and each digit's place gives its true size. Partitioning splits a number into these parts (47 = 40 + 7), turning tricky numbers into friendly pieces you can work with one at a time.

Smart RearrangingUse the commutative and associative properties to reorder additions and multiplications for easier calculation.Because adding and multiplying give the same answer in any order, you can rearrange to find friendly pairs that make 10, 20 or 100. To add 8 + 5 + 2, do 8 + 2 = 10 first, then + 5. This trick works only for adding and multiplying — never for subtraction or division.
  3. See the StructureUse the distributive property to split multiplications and recognise when two expressions are equivalent.Structure makes multiplying easier: 6 × 12 splits into 6 × 10 + 6 × 2 = 60 + 12 = 72 (the distributive property). Seeing structure also lets you judge equivalence — 20 × 5 and 2 × 50 both equal 100, while 3 × 8 and 3 + 8 do not match.
