A rectangle on grid paper has 3 rows with 4 squares in each row. What is its area?
3 rows of 4 squares is 4 + 4 + 4 = 12, so the area is 12 square units.
Why does length × width give the area of a rectangle?
Each row has 'length' squares and there are 'width' rows, so multiplying is just fast counting of all the squares.
A rectangle is 6 units long and 4 units wide. What is its area?
Area = length × width = 6 × 4 = 24 square units.
A 4×4 square and an 8×2 rectangle both have an area of 16. What about their perimeters?
The square's perimeter is 16 but the long rectangle's is 8+2+8+2 = 20. Same area does not mean same perimeter.
