The preface points to Goldschmidt at Fontenay-aux-Roses, 2½ inches, fourteen minor planets, as the standing answer to anyone waiting for a large telescope.

Why can you never see Mercury or Venus at midnight opposite the Sun?

Inferior planets reach at most about 27° and 47° from the Sun. Opposition is a geometry reserved for superior planets.

Match each claim to what the book actually does with it

Wilson’s cavities and Huygens’s ring are observations. Copernicus is a caution about air. The retrograde-orbit sentence is a slip; the satellites are the retrograde bodies.

What could a small telescope of Chambers’s type actually follow on Jupiter?

Chapter IX: four old satellites shine like 7th-magnitude stars and are the amateur’s stock-in-trade. The fifth, 9 September 1892, needs one of the largest telescopes.

How does Chambers treat a planet beyond Neptune?

Chapter XII: there seems some evidence, better understood with long-period comets, but little progress toward a solution. He does not announce a ninth planet.
