Why do different plants and animals live at different layers of the rainforest?
Sunlight is the reason. The top gets blazing sun, but very little light makes it down through all the leaves to the floor. So sun-loving life lives high in the canopy and emergent layer, while shade-lovers live in the dim understory and forest floor.
What does it mean that about 'one in ten' known species lives in the Amazon?
It means the Amazon is packed with an incredible variety of life — biodiversity. About a tenth of all the different kinds of living things scientists know about can be found in this single forest.
Why is a poison frog so brightly coloured?
The frog's dazzling colours are a warning costume. They signal to bigger animals that it carries poison in its skin, so predators learn to leave it alone. Bright colour helps this little frog stay alive.
