The Rainiest Place on EarthSpark curiosity about where a rainforest's constant rain comes from and introduce the water cycle as a loop.Rainforests are the rainiest places on Earth, raining on hundreds of days a year. Rather than a one-way trip, water moves in a repeating circle called the water cycle — and in a rainforest the trees are part of that circle.

Trees Drink With Their RootsExplain that tree roots absorb soil water and the tree lifts it up to the leaves.A tree works like a giant living straw: roots drink rainwater from the soil, and the tree pulls that water all the way up its trunk to the highest leaves, even on trees taller than a ten-story building.
  3. Trees Breathe Out WaterIntroduce transpiration — water leaving leaves as vapour through stomata — and its surprising scale.Leaves are covered in tiny holes (stomata) that open in sunlight and release water as invisible vapour, a process called transpiration. One large rainforest tree can breathe out hundreds to over a thousand litres of water a day, and a forest has millions of trees.

Invisible Water RisesExplain how rising vapour cools and condenses into clouds above the forest.Warm, damp air lifts off the treetops and cools high in the sky, where vapour condenses back into tiny visible drops that form clouds. Over the Amazon, clouds often build up over the forest by afternoon — the forest making its own weather.
  5. And the Rain Comes DownComplete the loop: droplets merge, grow heavy, and fall as precipitation back into the soil.Inside clouds, tiny drops join into bigger ones until they are too heavy to float and fall as rain (precipitation). The rain soaks into the soil back to the roots, closing the water cycle so it can start again.
  6. The Forest Makes Its Own RainState the through-line: about half of rainforest rain is recycled by the trees ('flying rivers').In a great rainforest like the Amazon, roughly half of the rain is moisture the forest breathed out itself, forming 'flying rivers' of water vapour in the sky. The trees act as pumps that help create the rain, not just receive it.
  7. What If the Trees Were Gone?Apply the idea: removing trees breaks the loop and reduces rain, which matters for people too.Because trees make about half the rain, cutting down the forest removes part of the rain machine and the land gets less rain over time. That forest-made water also travels to distant farms and rivers, which is why protecting rainforests matters far beyond the forest itself.
